- Harvey Jones

Purchased Piera from Joe Welch in May, 2001. Now in our second season together, Piera and I are developing a great relationship.
|
- Barbara Jones

My first mate (and co-owner) who actually took the helm (pictured above)before I did!
|
- Carey Jones

My multi-talented, 16 year old daughter who took to sailing and Piera immediately. Carey was great to have aboard our first Opera House Cup campaign in 2001, even if the wind was a no show.
|
- Captain Dan Harper

Captain Dan signed up to be Piera's professional captain, my sailing coach and owners representaive overseeing Piera's restoration even before I took delivery in May, 2001. His enthusiasm and vision were crtical to the success of the project.

- Walter Paine

Walter commissioned Phil Rhodes and the A&R yard to build Piera for delivery in 1955. Walter raced Piera successfully throughout northern New England and maritime Canada for 10 years. Triumphs included:
•First, Mt. Desert Rock Race •Two-time overall winner, CCA Jeffrey's Ledge Race •Second and third, Monhegan Island Race •Third, Class A, CCA Marblehead to Halifax •First, Maine Retired Skipper's Race

- Barbara Moyer

Walter's beautiful wife was a pleasure to meet at the christening.

- Piera (The Original) Paine

Designer: La Forza del destino (design inimitable) Builder: Our Creator & modicum of prime genetic material Launched: Similar time zone, Hull #362535
Originally (original spelling) built for reasons that continue to elude the less imaginative, PIERA (the original), has had an illustrious racy history of cruising smoothly in all kinds of waters. In continuous service since her christening, Piera has sailed from Maine to Europe, to distant shores & offshore waters where even angels fear to dredge. It is not unusual to enter strange galleries, microtonal music bars and public radio ports-o’call and be greeted by someone who has spooned & crooned etc. with Piera (the non-boat).
Her recent history has had her gracing New York City and competing, we can hope more aggressively, for prime time productions and music commissions in rough competitive seas. Two Opera Houses (with ample plastic cups & trophies) and a thousand delis are just blocks away from her home and put her in an elite sorority of classy dames with the redoubtable handicap of good names.
While Piera is undoubtedly beautifully preserved without benefit of lifts or cranes (or coats of varnish), over the years she has shown a decided preference for the arts and thus remains relatively skipper-free. Although intermittent foul weather may dull the varnish on occasion, or certain brigands of the square waves might make daring attempts at pirating & plundering, her plank-on-frame construction and bright work keep her thoroughly elegant and sound.
In September 2002. the Hinckley Company was commissioned to restore Piera (the boat) to her original elegance. Piera, (the original), will not require quite such extensive or expensive restoration (unless someone volunteers to take on this dubious project). Piera (the original) will splash into Southwest Harbor again sometime in August, most probably in a modest dingy, ever ‘intent upon building on her legacy as a familiar icon on the starting lines of numerous New England venues’.
Note: Note: The pic on this page documents a segment of Piera (the original) and painting—home at port, NYC

- Randy (l) and Ted (r) Gurley

Ted Gurley of Nantucket is responsible for saving Piera from an untimely demise in the late '60's when he rescued her from a mud flat in Palm Beach, Florida restored her and brought her to Nantucket.
Randy Gurley acquired Piera from his father, sailed her to her first Oper House Cup victory in 1974 and then launched a successful charter business in nantucket in the summer and St. Barth's in the winter.
|
- Maya Gurley

Maya was first recruited by Randy Gurley to be his first mate on Piera in the St. Barth's charter era. It is a great feeling to know that Piera helped to define their relationship ultimately resulting in marriage and two kids. Living on Piera for ten years and "commuting" between St. Barth's and Nantucket must have been a special early life together. Maya and Randy now live happily in St. Barth's with Maya's early cooking experiences aboard Piera parlayed into a very successful restaurant that bears her name.
|
- David Stonesifer

David has been a friend since Barb & I first moved to California in 1980. David has worked with us on the restorations of 3 houses in California and 5 houses on Nantucket prior to tackling the Piera project. David's critical eye has helped to enhace Piera's original beauty both topside and down below.
|
- Rich Wall

College roomate, Best Man and close friend, Rich has picked up sailing quickly and is becoming a familiar crew member on Piera.
|
- Rob Garrison

One of my closest friends on Nantucket, Rob's boating experience and knowledge of local waters have been a great source of knowledge. The picture documents the first fish caught on Piera (trolling off the coast of Maine on the way up to Southwest Harbor, September, 2001) in the 'post pretzel" era.
|
- Rick Nopper

As the person most responsible for getting me into serious boating, Rick deserves special attention. While Rick and I once considered acquiring Bolero, I think we are happier with Maleguena and Piera.
|
- Bob Prohaska

Biking partner and valuable member of the Piera delivery crew. As the rookie, Bob "earned" the graveyard watch in the open oacean.
|
- Chris Mackey

Able seaman and excellent racer. Chris has done whatever has been asked of him to support the racing effort over 2001 and 2002 racing seasons.
|
- Gary Hoyt

Olympic sailor, sail boat designer and entrepreneur. Gary's strategic sense of a race course and tactical abilities at the start of a race served us well in 2001.
|
- Bob Hoyt

Bob is the most reliable crew member on nantucket. I can call him at almost anytime of the day or night and with 10 minutes notice he will be ready to crew on Piera. Bob lives and breathes sail boat racing. My most vivid recollection of the 2001 Gifford Bowl was Bob Hoyt as the human spinaker pole down haul It was blowing 20+, Harvey had 4 days experience at the helm of Piera and Bob's feet were 6 feet off the deck (or was that 15 feet off the water) as he wrestled the pole back onto the deck.
|
- Mike Bickford

Mike Bickford was Hinckley's senior carpenter and day to day supervisor of the Piera restoration. It is fair to say that the project could not have been completed onn schedule without Mike's commitment and attention to detail.
|
- Mike King

Mike King was the overall Piera Program Manager for the Hinckley Company. Mike ensured that the resources required were available and that nothing would hold up our schedule. Nice job Mike.
|
- Steve Snow

Steve Snow was the senior Hinckley carpenter responsible for the structural restoration of the hull. Also holds the title of lead saw in the "White Oak Boys". Steve, I have no "gripes", you did a fabulous job.
|
- Jad Dow

Jad is a senior member of The Hinckley Company service team. Jad has worked with Harvey on Square Wave since she was launched in Y2K. Jad volunteered to help deliver Piera to Nantucket from Southwest Harbor. Thanks Jad!
|
- Piero and Liz

Pier"o" Fenci crewed on Pier"a" with Randy Gurley in the '70's. Subsequently Piero was an invaluable crew member in the 2002 Gifford Bowl.
